I was a member of the team that prepared the 32-page official tournament magazine of the TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships Istanbul 2011. 10,000 copies were printed every day and delivered at the Sinan Erdem Dome. I created the significant part of the written content in the magazine that was prepared in two languages: turkish and english. Kader Ay was the editorial coordinator, Ilker Kilic was the editor in chief, Cetin Akdeniz was the art director, Berna Yilmaz was the reporter, Deniz Aciksoz was the photography editor, Baris Asik was the photorapher and Ozlem Baro double-checked the translations.

2011 WTA Şampiyonası resmi turnuva dergileri

2011 İstanbul TEB BNP Paribas WTA Şampiyonası boyunca Sinan Erdem Spor Salonu’nda dağıtılmak üzere her gün 10 bin adet basılan resmi turnuva dergisini hazırlayan ekipte yer aldım. Her gün 32 sayfa olan derginin türkçe ve ingilizce içeriğinin önemli bölümü benim elimden çıktı. Derginin yayın koordinatörlüğünü Kader Ay, yayın yönetmenliğini İlker Kılıç, görsel yönetmenliğini Çetin Akdeniz, muhabirliğini Berna Yılmaz, fotoğraf editörlüğünü Deniz Açıksöz, fotoğrafçılığını, Barış Aşık, ingilizce metinlerin kontrolünü ise Özlem Baro yaptı.

İstanbul’un Kleo’Petra’sı

İSTANBUL (30 Ekim) – 2011 TEB BNP Paribas WTA Şampiyonası neredeyse hiçbir aksilik yaşanmadan geride kaldı. Dün Sinan Erdem’den manzaralar, hafta boyunca olduğu gibi keyifliydi. Çiftler finalini bile hatırı sayılır bir kitle izlerken, teklerde bu rakam 13.676 ile hafta rekoruydu.

Seyircilerin nabzını tutmak için salonun önünde dolaşmaya başladığımda, konuştuğum hemen herkesin tenisle ilgisinin üst düzey olmasına şaşırmadım değil. Hemen herkes finalin kimler arasında oynanacağını ezbere biliyor, çoğunluk Kvitova’yı destekliyordu.

Tenisi ‘futbol gibi kaba bir spor olmadığı’ için seven genç Melis ile biraz sohbet ettikten sonra, kuyrukta bekleyen dört üniversiteli erkeğe yaklaştım. Hepsinin önceliği futbol, ama bu hafta dört günlerini Sinan Erdem’de geçirmişler. “Şu an tuttuğunuz takımın maçı olsaydı yine buraya gelir miydiniz?” diye sordum, “Bilet aldık, o yüzden gelirdik” dediler.

Seyirci çok etkiliydi

Ailede tenis tutkunları olduğu için Sinan Erdem’e ‘sürüklenen’ Nalan’ın gözdesi ise yüzmeymiş. Tenisin pahalı bir spor olmasından yakındı. Kurs ve ekipman fiyatları ile seyircilerin uyarılara rağmen fotoğraf çekerken flaş kullanmaktaki ısrarları, gün boyunca duyabildiğim nadir yakınmalar. Güvenlik görevlilerinin ağzından çıkanlar dahil…

“Türkiye’deki yayın politikalarının %98’i futbola sıkıştığı için Türkiye’de sporseverliğin gelişmediğini düşünüyordum, bu turnuva bunun ispatıdır. Demek ki başka sporlara da yaşam hakkı varmış” diyen Eurosport Genel Yayın Yönetmeni Bağış Erten ile birlikte finali izlemeye başladık. Hafta boyunca yaptığı gibi doğru zamanda doğru reaksiyon gösteren ve geriye düşen tenisçiye destek verip maça döndüren seyircinin de katkı sağladığı çekişmeli mücadeleyi, Viktoria Azarenka’yı üç sette geçen Petra Kvitova kazandı. Şampiyona böylece, ilk katılımında Kvitova’ya, ilk ev sahipliğinde de İstanbul’a güzel anılar yaşatarak geride kaldı.

‘Benim korsanım işini bilir’
Turnuva izleyicisi gerçek anlamda bir tenis izleyicisi olmayı başarsa da, futboldan kalma alışkanlıklarımız dün de kendini göstermişti. Metrobüsten iner inmez önce etrafımı karaborsacılar sardı. Pazarlığı 50 liradan başlatıyorlardı. Ardından korsan atkı-tişörtçüler gözüme ilişti. Simit-ayrancılar ve süt mısırcılar tabloyu tamamlarken bir tek köfte-ekmekçiler eksikti.

Köprüler yaptırdım gelip yürümeye

İSTANBUL (16 Ekim) - Geçen ay Uğur Vardan’ı arayıp “Ağabey, bu yıl da Avrasya Maratonu’na beni gönder, Usain Bolt’a düzgün çıkış nasıl yapılırmış göstereyim” dedikten sonra, yağmurdan ürküp “Tüh, telefonun alarmı çalmamış” yalanına sığınmak olmazdı. Mecburen sıcak yatağımı bırakıp Taksim’den kaldırılan ücretsiz otobüslere doğru yol aldım. Geçen yılın aksine otobüslerin önünde kuyruk yoktu. Ayrıca bu yılki ‘sosyal içerikli mesaj verme yasağı’nın, daha ‘renksiz’ bir Avrasya tecrübesi yaşatacağından ziyadesiyle emindim.

Altunizade’ye 08.30 gibi ulaştığımda önce gözlerimi, sonra da ‘haber bulma radarı’mı açıp diğer katılımcıların arasına karıştım. Gözüme ilk çarpan, bu yıl formasıyla gelenlerin büyük bölümünün Fenerbahçe taraftarı olmasıydı. S. Donetsk maçında yaşananlar nedeniyle basından olduğumu söylemekten imtina ederek aralarına karıştım; formayla gelme konusunda herhangi bir örgütlenme olmamış. “Fenerbahçe buraya” tezahüratları eşliğinde Sarı-Lacivertli formalar büyük öbekler haline gelirken, ses sisteminden ‘8-0’ı unutma’yı akıllara getiren ‘İşte Hayat’ çalmaya başlayınca Beşiktaşlıların da desibeli birden yükseldi. Merak edenlere hemen söyleyeyim, Galatasaraylılar bu kez biraz fazla ‘bireysel’ kalmışlardı.

‘Fodepar’a iten şarkılar!
Bu yıl açıklanan yeni kurallardan biri de ‘numarası olmayan kişilerin koşuya kesinlikle alınmayacağı’ idi. Bu kurala uyulmadığını gösteren sayısız kişiden biri olarak (montuma çengelli iğne batırmaya kıyamadım), diğer ‘numarasızlar’ ile aramda duygusal bir bağ kurarken, karşıma üzerine Avrasya resmi numarası iliştirilmiş Trabzonspor formasıyla Dost çıktı. Dost, start alanına girer girmez herkesin ilgisini üzerine çeken sevimli bir köpekti. Sahibi Haluk Teoman’a yaklaştım, sırf bu koşuya katılıp köprüden geçebilmek için İsviçre’den kalkıp gelmişler. Eh, o da Dost’a numara almayı ihmal etmemiş. Dost’un başında birden onlarca kişi birikip fotoğraf çekme ve ‘baş okşama’ yarışına girince biraz korktum ama Haluk’un söylediğine göre ilgi odağı olmaya alışıkmış Dost.
Dost’a veda edip, göğüs numarasından vazgeçmeyenler arasındaki en genç katılımcı, iki buçuk yaşındaki Yavuz’a biraz sataşmaya çalıştım. Bende ‘numara olmadığını’ görünce pek yüz vermedi. Start noktasına doğru yürürken önce Serdar Ortaç, ardından da Demet Akalın şarkılarının insanı erken start almaya iten muhteşemliğine kulak tıkayıp pozisyonumu aldım. Ne var ki geri sayım bittikten üç dakika sonra hâlâ yerimizde sayıyorduk. Meğer geçen yıl köprü çok sallandığı için insanları bu kez parça parça salıyorlarmış start noktasından…

‘Koşmak mı yürümek mi?’
Geçen sene köprü üzerinde şahit olduğumuz Türkçe ve Kürtçe halaylar, Boğaz’a nazır kahvaltı yapan aileler, çocuk korolarından bu yıl eser yoktu. Bunun ne kadarı organizatörlerin uyarılarının, ne kadarı ise yağmurun marifeti; herhalde en sağlıklı cevabı gelecek yıl vereceğiz. Geçen seneden bir farklılık da köprü üzerinde denize en yakın şeritlerin kapatılmış olmasıydı. Gerçi, insanların o bölüme geçip fotoğraf çekmelerine izin verildi.
Geçen yılki koşunun da en ‘geyik’ bölümü köprüydü. Yılda sadece bir kez yaya trafiğine açıldığından olsa gerek, köprüye ulaştığımızda herkes espri patlatma yarışına giriyor. Bu yılki gözdelerim: “Islanıyoruz. Devlet gelecek sene köprünün üstünü kapatsın”, “Ben uzaylı olsam direkt şu an saldırırım, incelemek istiyorlarsa her ‘örnekten’ adam var”, “Hafız, koşarken mi daha çok ıslanıyorduk, yürürken mi?”
Bir de tabii Ortaköy’ün üzerinden geçerken, “Aşkım yorulduysan dinlenelim” diyen genç kızın nefes nefese kalmasına rağmen gurur yapan erkek arkadaşına da değinmek lazım.
Maratonun Barbaros’tan sonraki bölümü diller dışarıda ‘yüründü’. Bense geçen yıldan daha az eğlenmeme rağmen, en iyi derecemi geliştirmenin (iki saat bir dakika) haklı gururuyla evimin yolunu tuttum.

:: Sosyal ‘mesaj köprüsü’
Bu yıl ‘Sosyal mesaj verme yasağı’ nedeniyle koşu biraz sessiz geçti. Ben de insanların yanına yaklaşıp vermek istedikleri sosyal mesajları bana fısıldamalarını istedim. İşte o mesajlar: Barış, hemen şimdi! / Şehitler ölmez, vatan bölünmez! / Parasız eğitim bir haktır! / Küme düşme kaldırılsın! / Küme düşme kaldırılmasın! / Üniversitede kızlar teklif etsin! / Yeter, Yıldırım Demirören!

Zokora has his first interview in Turkey for daily Radikal

ISTANBUL (Jun. 6) – Didier Zokora’s transfer would make the fans’ mouths water even it was just a rumour. Although he’s 30 years old now, he played a total of 41 games for Sevilla last season. The “Maestro”, who was the hero of Tottenham fans before he switched to Spain and who rejected Real Madrid’s offer because he felt like he wouldn’t be a first team regular, is going to play for Trabzonspor next season.The transfer process was long, but in the end the clubs finally agreed and the player is convinced. The midfielder, who’s originally from Ivory Coast, has signed a four-year contract with Trabzonspor. There will be a revision in Trabzonspor’s squad this season and the 6 million euros paid for Zokora will be ignored or criticized depending on the success of this revision. What’s for sure is that Zokora, who gave his first interview to Radikal in Turkey, is determined to be successful in his new club.

Didier, we’d like to congratulate you first for the transfer to Trabzonspor. Why did you chose this team?
I’m an hungry and passionate person in all aspects of life. This includes football as well. I always look for a new challenge. I’m a hard worker. Trabzonspor will be a new challenge for me. I always try to prove myself again and again. That’s what motivates me on the way to Trabzon. Of course, them being in Champions League this season was a factor too. I’d like to play in Champions League.

People from Black Sea region are known by their passionate characteristics. Especially when it comes to football. If they love a player, they love him until the death. However, they can’t tolerate the mistakes very easily. Does this put a pressure on you, or do you see it as a challenge?
Of course I see this as a challenge. I used to play in England. The situation is not so different there as well. Fans always expect success. To be honest, this is same in all over the world. I managed to be loved by the fans in England. I’ll try to do the same in Trabzonspor. I’m not afraid. Not even a little bit. Fans always want to see winnig players. I will do my best for my team and the fans.

What’s your individual goal in Trabzonspor?
For me, one of the most important things is the communication. With the club and at the same time, with the fans. I’ll really pay attention to communication in Trabzonspor. I’m already taking steps about this. I’m doing my best to have the healthiest relations with the board, the manager and my colleagues.

We know that you can’t look at the field when your team is taking a penalty. When the things were going bad in Tottenham, you joked about that you might have casted a Voodoo spell on the team. Is this why you don’t watch penalties? You’re afraid of casting another Voodoo spell?
(Laughing) Close! When I was very young, I missed a penalty shot. After that I started not looking at penalty shots when my teammates were taking them. I thought it would bring bad luck. When my teammates take a penalty, I look at our goalkeeper. If he raises his arms and starts running, then I understand that we scored. Then I can join my teammates celebrate.

Is this still the same? You still don’t watch penalties taken?
It’s still the same man. I don’t change. I don’t ever change!

Were you interested in Turkish football before? Which players and clubs were you familiar with?
I sure was interested. I already knew about Trabzonspor, Fenerbahce, Galatasaray and Besiktas. I have friends who played for these teams. We used to talk about Turkish football when we met these friends. For example, Keita, my friend from national team was playing for Galatasaray. Niang, Fenerbahce forward, is a close friend of mine too.

I guess you asked Keita for some information about Trabzonspor. Did you talk to Drogba as well. Galatasaray fans are dreaming about him joining to the team.
No. I haven’t talked to Drogba recently. I talked to Keita though. He said positive things about Trabzonspor and Turkey. Other than him, I talked to a lot of people who played in Turkey. I also collected some information about the city. All the references were positive. That’s why I was convinced to come here.

It’s claimed that Turkish football is more physical than technical. You’re talented in these both aspects. Which Zokora are we going to watch in Turkey? Zokora who shows his technical abilities all the time, or Zokora who’s famous with his aggressive physical playing style?
I don’t know. It’s not up to only me. You know, the football is quite physical in England. Since that’s the norm, you don’t face many bookings. But if you play the same way in La Liga, then you’d definitely be booked more often. This will be the case in Turkey. My card statistics will depend on the “harshness” level of the league. On the other hand, I can easily promise that whatever the level is, I always will try to do my best. You can be sure about this.

What’s your message to Trabzonspor fans? You were quite popular among them on social networks even before the transfer was official. They look forward you.
I’m really enthusiastic about going to Turkey and playing for Trabzonspor. I want to promise this, I’ll fight for Trabzonspor to the bitter end. Our fans should know that. I’m a hard working guy. I won’t only try to show my own quality here, but I’ll try my best to raise the quality of the league as well. They shall wait for me!

Allen Iverson scores two points in Turkish league debut

ISTANBUL (Nov. 21) – It was not the first time Allen Iverson stepped into Besiktas Akatlar Arena, but it was the first time he saw the hall exceed its capacity. The Besiktas Cola Turka game against visiting Fenerbahce Ulker, defending champions in Turkish Basketball League was extremely important for the fans, since the opponent was the biggest rival of the club. After scoring 15 points on Tuesday against Hemofarm in Eurocup, Iverson disappointed his 3,500 fans in his Turkish league debut on Sunday by only scoring two points. More frustratingly for the fans, Besiktas, also known as Black Eagles, lost the game 74-67.

Looking physically unfit to be of much help, Iverson had an hard time against Omer Onan, the shooting guard of Fenerbahce who won silver in 2010 FIBA World Championship with the Turkish National Team. ‘The answer’ sat on the bench for the entire second and fourth periods, and he scored his only two points in the third, while Onan was not on the court. Aside from hitting only one of his six shot attempts in 19 minutes, Iverson had four rebounds and two turnovers.

These statistics were not bad enough to stop Besiktas fans from cheering for Iverson the whole game. But it’s not hard to guess that this reaction will change if the results stay the same. There is a possibility that the expectations are not as low as assumed.

“Iverson is one of the legends of basketball. I assume he’s not training regularly since more than one year. That’s why we need to be patient,” said one of Besiktas fans during halftime. But when his expectations for the whole season were asked, he didn’t seem that modest: “He should star by his own and be a team player at the same time. But the most important thing is that he should make us champions.”

Besiktas coach Burak Biyiktay sounded like he is not sure what to do with an unfit NBA star. “The expectations are so high regarding Iverson. But he’s unfit and unready. On the other hand we all want to see him play for a long time. So it’s a problem whether he plays or not,” said Besiktas’s low-profile coach in his post-game interview. “Today, he played almost 20 minutes, but did no help to the team. Allen Iverson is not the Allen Iverson that we know. He needs time.”

The Black Eagles lost both games with AI, and in Turkey even three defeats in a row can trigger a crisis. “Iverson may cause the coach to get fired in a month” said Onur Erdem, a reporter for NTV Spor, one of the most respected sport channels in Turkey. “Fans’ expectations are getting higher every day and Biyiktay, under the pressure of the fans, is letting Iverson play although he is not ready. In fact everybody is well aware that this roster can’t win the league. But with Iverson involved, people may start to think that the roster needs a high-profile coach. The situation is similar to Miami Heat, where people started to think that Erik Spoelstra won’t be able to handle a roster involving LeBron, Bosh and Wade.”

‘The answer’ has a two-year contract with Besiktas. But he is be able to leave the club next summer if he gets an offer from the NBA. He needs to start playing regularly soon and put up good statistics to be able to get the attention of NBA teams. But it seems that he needs to be patient and get into shape, quickly. As long as he’s physically unfit, it’s tough for him to be of much help.

How can this paradox be solved, that’s the question that Besiktas needs to find the answer.
